The Green Team was established in 2018 with the mission to incrementally move the Beth El community into more environmentally sustainable habits. The initial step was planning and implementing a “zero waste” policy for our weekly Shabbat Kiddush lunch: all lunch remainders – food, plates and utensils – disposed of in containers for compostables, recyclables, or trash, guided by signs, pictures, and volunteers. This garbage sorting effort is continually spreading to other events as labeled bins appear throughout the synagogue. Beth El’s summer day camp, for instance, uses sustainable items, and young campers have fun as they learn appropriate disposal methods for different materials.
