Chief Operating Officer:  Full Job Description


Beth El Synagogue Center is a large, multi-generational, egalitarian congregation, located in New Rochelle, New York and affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. We thrive on activity. Our energetic members and guests of every age come to Beth El for spirituality, learning, socialization and recreation. In 2018 we embarked on a journey focused on discovering a vision for Beth El that captures the legacy and values that have provided a strong foundation for our synagogue while exploring ways to co-create a vibrant and sustainable future amidst the instability most American Jewish institutions face.

We are now searching for a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to partner with our clergy and lead our Synagogue operations and realization of this vision. Our ideal candidate is an inspirational, results driven leader with extensive experience within a small enterprise or not-for-profit organization and who is passionate about leading in a collaborative and purpose-driven environment. This is an exciting time for Beth El and we hope you will come join us to help build our vibrant future together. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Collaborate with clergy, professional staff, lay leadership and volunteers to drive operational strategy and needs that are aligned with Beth El’s vision and values
  • Translate strategy into actionable goals that drive performance and growth by leading organizational goal setting, performance management and annual operating planning
  • Oversee Synagogue administration, operations, budget, facilities and employees, with an emphasis on building a highly inclusive and engaging culture
  • Oversee compliance with Synagogue policies and procedures, as well as all applicable federal, state, and local legal requirements
  • Model, lead and build trusted relationships with the congregation, clergy and other professional staff, as well as the wider community

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, or related field
  • 5+ years experience in executive leadership positions
  • Leadership skills, with steadfast resolve and personal integrity
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, written communications
  • Understanding of advanced business planning
  • A solid grasp of data analysis and performance metrics
  • Ability to diagnose problems quickly and have foresight into potential issues

 
Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous roles in a client services industry
  • Master’s degree in business or related field
  • Fundraising experience
  • Previous experience with Jewish not for profits a plus

Compensation and Benefits 

$125,000-$135,000 commensurate with experience plus generous benefits package
