We're coming off our first 'semester' of Jewish Literature -- focusing on the short story -- and we're ready to start another semester in September. Here's what we have planned through the winter.

Fall Semester [10 weeks]

  1. read six weeks of short stories written by contemporary Israeli authors and then four weeks of Classic Yiddish short stories.

Winter Semester [10 weeks]

  1. begin with four weeks of The Bible and the Bard, using the short story to explore how the plays written by Wm. Shakespeare were influenced by Torah. follow the Bard with six weeks of short story readings from Classic Chasidic Literature in which we will explore the split between the more scholarly approach to Jewish life taken by the traditionally orthodox versus the more emotional approach of the Chasidic Jewish community.

More detailed information will follow as schedules are developed. Meanwhile, know that fees will remain as before [$220 per individual per semester, $20 of which will go to Beth El] and classes will meet once weekly on Mondays at Beth El in New Rochelle. Know, too, that enrollment will be strictly limited to the first 20 to register. Our instructor, of course, will again be Dr. Eleanor Ehrenkranz.
